What to Wear for Your Beach Photoshoot (Light & Airy Guide)
Planning what to wear for your beach photoshoot can feel stressful.. but it doesn’t have to be! As a Myrtle Beach photographer who specializes in light & airy portraits, I’ve seen how the right outfits can take your family or senior photos from “just okay” to absolutely stunning!!!
Whether you’re booking a family beach photoshoot in Myrtle Beach, a romantic couples session, or dreamy senior photos, this guide will help you look and feel amazing!!
1. Stick to Light & Airy Colors
Think neutrals and pastels: white, cream, soft blues, blush pinks, sage green, and tan. These tones keep your photos timeless, soft, and natural against the sand and ocean… and less distractions, and more focus on YOU!
Tip from a Myrtle Beach family photographer: Skip neons, logos, and heavy dark colors…. they distract from your faces and don’t match the soft beach vibe.

2. Moms, Start With Your Outfit ✨
In most families, mom sets the tone! If you feel beautiful and comfortable, everyone else will coordinate easily.
- A flowy maxi dress is perfect for movement + the ocean breeze.
- Choose fabrics like linen, chiffon, or cotton that look soft in photos.
- Build the family’s colors around you….. if you’re in a cream dress, let dad wear light blue and the kids wear neutrals.

3. Seniors: Let Your Personality Shine 🌸
Your senior session should reflect you!
- For senior girls: pastel maxi dresses, white flowy skirts, or even a casual jeans + neutral top combo.
- For senior guys: linen button-ups, polos, or a crisp white shirt with khaki or blue shorts.
- Add an accessory you love (hat, blanket, sunglasses) for variety.
Pro tip: The best senior photos are relaxed and fun…. wear something that feels like “you,” just a little elevated.

4. Comfort Is Key
The last thing you want is your kids (or husband 😉) miserable because of itchy, stiff clothes.
- Kids: drawstring shorts, polos, sundresses with ruffles or movement.
- Dads: polos or light button-ups with khaki/blue shorts.
- Shoes? Barefoot is always a win for the beach.

5. Add Texture & Movement
Textures (lace, ruffles, knits) and fabrics that move in the breeze look amazing in beach photography.
Just avoid everyone wearing the same pattern — a little variety makes the whole group look more natural.
6. Coordinate, Don’t Match 👯
The “everyone in white shirts + jeans” trend is out. Instead:
- Pick 2–3 colors that complement each other.
- Mix solids with subtle stripes or florals.
- Think cohesive, not identical.

7. Plan Ahead
- Finalize outfits at least a week before your shoot.
- Schedule haircuts 7–10 days before.
- Keep accessories simple — a hat, necklace, or soft layered jewelry works perfectly.
✨ Bonus: Make It True to Your Family
The best outfits are the ones that feel authentic. If you’re a denim-loving crew, wear it! If your family leans more polished, dress it up a little. When you look back years later, you want to remember you…. not stiff, uncomfortable clothes that didn’t feel natural.
